New Arrivals

Last night, I went to the pound and picked up a black labrador mother and her 9 puppies - they are so adorable!  And yes, there is one chocolate brown in there, female!  We had a great night introducing the puppies and mama to their new room, they all ate and drank and got a much needed dewormer.  Tonight we are all going to the vet's, puppies are eating and drinking so at least 6 weeks old so it's time for their first DA2PP and check-up.  It's going to be a costly night - nine check-ups and shots - YIKES!  Soon, I will be separating mommy and giving her the much deserved time without being sucked on or terrorized by 9 siblings Ha! Ha!.  She is such a sweet girl, very quiet, such a good mother and dog who loves to cuddle!  She settled in nicely, at first she seemed scared of our larger dogs when she saw them from afar but she got used to us walking in and out with different dogs every few minutes!  She took two long walks on the property and wanted to search every corner and look at everything, she went to every building to check them out! Last night, I was going to name her Suzie but being we named her puppies by selecting places as names - I've decided mom will be named Brooklyn instead, to match her pups!  We have 5 females and 4 males, all with names such as Alexandria, Banff, Victoria, Boston, Windsor...  Will be posting pictures of individual puppies very soon with their new names!  But, you can see a group picture right now under available soon.

Things we could use!

If anyone has a few kitchen upper cupboards, we could use the singles or doubles here and there in the modular home to hold our newspapers, paper towel rolls and cleaning products. We also need more tiles to finish the hallway and Paws Spa (Grooming area), the only spots left to do! Paint, if you have old cans of paint, used or not, any color we will take them.

On the doggy side, we always need Multi-advantage/Advantage or Revolution for each dog, each month so if you have left over please bring it to NARC. If you wish to get us a box, we have discounts at our vet's - you can always leave money on our account at Blackburn Animal Hospital at any time, they are opened till 7pm every day and sat between 10am an 2pm. We also could use another large bottle of Panacur (dewormer), cost is high so we need financial help for these medications!

Thank you for your support over the years, NARC is always changing and looking better every day because of volunteers time and energy and of course your donations! Sending you hugs and kisses from each and every doggy we have at NARC!

Hard Working Weekend

On saturday, while I was at the vet's with Cyan for his first DA2PP with rabies, Nooky and Spit Fyre for their second DA2PP with Rabies and Coco for his ear to be stitched up. Yep, his brother Tarzan ripped his ear in half so we had to bring him to the vet's for surgery! He is antibiotics for a few weeks, has a wrap around his whole head holding his ear in place and a cone which he really doesn't like but has to keep for 2 whole weeks.

Anyhoo, while I was at the vet's, the volunteers painted 2 walls in the main entrance, an almost chocolate brown so it really looks good. On Sunday, we got together and gave a first coat on 2 walls in the sunroom, a dark purple while I took down the L shaped cabinet from the wall in the sunroom and moved it to the Paws Spa (grooming area) and re-installed it. Giving us more space in the sunroom for play time and also giving us shelving on top of the bath for towels, shampoo, etc...

We are still looking for tiles to finish the hallway and Paws Spa (our grooming area) so if you have a few tiles to donate, please do so and we'll be able to finish our tilling throughout the modular home! If anyone has left over paint, we are also taking some in as we would like to be able to paint every room at NARC this winter! We could also use a few larger peices of drywall and putty.

Always lots to do but hopefully once winter/spring is over, we will be done and be able to enjoy the updated/renovated modular home for years to come! You should see all the new dog houses my friend Pierre has made for our pooches, it will really look nice this spring/summer when clients visit to see our doggies all have their own doggy home!

Update and "Did You Know?"

Hope everyone had a Happy New Year!? To update you on things at NARC, the floor in the "office" is now all tiled and grouted, it looks great, colourful and really nice. So far, those that have seen it have commented that even with few tiles here and there from different people, it actually looks really good. It definitely is easier for our volunteers to keep clean and looks better when you visit!

All the doggies are doing well, Cyan our little parvo pup is getting better daily and eating like a little pig so he should gain very quickly. He is still skinny looking compared to his sibling who had a week's head start on the eating and plumping himself! I have pictures so will post them shortly so you can all see their cute faces. I have been mother hen with all the puppies that come through our doors. As usual, not letting volunteers take them outside for walks as they are so tiny and have already been through so much. So, here are my suggestions and advice. Adoptive families should really wait a bit before strutting their new puppies outside to see the world. Puppies are like babies and you have to ask yourself - would I put my 3 month old baby outside to walk/crawl in the snow and in the -20 temperature? People tend to forget that they are babies and we have to protect them. Also, no treats until they are 6 months - again, do you feed you baby anything in the kitchen - no... we introduce them to foods one at a time so it is the same concept! If you give your puppy anything and everything to eat, he will get the flu and may possibly die from dehydration. Same as if they have only had their 1st DA2PP or even 2nd DA2PP booster, you really need to wait before introducing them to other dogs or even letting them walk anywhere on the streets or at the vet's, parks, petstores, etc.... You may think you know your neighbours pet but have they updated their dogs shots? If not, they may be disease carriers, no symptoms but carriers no less... Your puppy can still get Parvo even after it's second shots so ensure he has had all his boosters, a month after his 3rd DA2PP before letting him play with others, walk in the park, go to a petstore, etc... We have a parvo puppy at NARC and even with him there, we are being extra careful so that he can't contaminate the house or be near any of the other puppies, all of our puppies could have gotten parvo if we weren't careful so if we can do it with 7 puppies in the house - one who is actually parvo infected... You can too by not showing your puppy off until he gets his 3rd booster, not letting him play or walk where other dogs have been and secluding him for his first 4 months of life. It's not that long and you will appreciate it for years to come! Enjoy your new puppy when you get it but please be careful, I know it is hard not to show them off but it is what is best for your new baby! If you really want to get out there, carry your puppy - that's fine as long as he doesn't touch possible infected grounds. I am so sad when I hear that someone has lost their dog to Parvo, it can be stopped but we all have to work together and be more diligent with our new babies! Good luck and watch out for more "Did you know" coming up all year!

Tiles - looking good!

After caring for the dogs in the morning, letting them all go out for their business, eating and drinking...  Andy came around 11am to finish the plywood and install the tiles in the entrance, I went to home depot and used up what was left of our gift cards for tile cement.  Thank you Andy for all of your help and hard work, he certainly didn't stop all weekend and worked very hard on getting it done.  Unfortunately, we are lacking a box or two to be able to finish it all off - anyone with spare tiles?  If so, please drop them off in our donations drop box at the front of the property or if the volunteers are there and gates opened, drop them off directly at the rescue!  Almost done and it looks very colorful - keep in mind these were all donations so the entrance floor is blue, white, grey, orange, different colors but Andy did a very good job in making it look really nice and also engraving NARC at the centre with smaller tiles - wonderful work - I love it!  I will take a snap shot and share with you soon!

Good renovation day began!

After caring for the dogs this morning, I finished moving everything out of the main entry, stored one filing cabinet in the shed and keept only the large one, moved out the fridge, washer, toys bins, leash bins, 3 dressers, our 4 large food containers, etc...  Then Andy came to help in the afternoon and we ripped out the old floor with help from Ron who popped in with Priscille for a visit which ended up in helping with renovations!  All of this in preparation to install the plywood and tiles tomorrow!  I left for diner at 7pm after being there since 8:30am while Andy installed 2 plywood sheets.  I went back later to take the dogs out one last time before bedtime and painted the the floor with mold proof stuff to help with future usage - it being our main entrance and all...  We will be back in there tomorrow bright and early for doggy breakfast and walks before they are stuck in the house while the tiles set for a few hours!  After we are done the tiles tomorrow, no more entering the NARC home for a few hours so they set properly and then we're back to our usual routine - of course on Monday is grouting so at least 2-4 hours of non-walking on the floors after that too!  Quite the adventure lol.

Join us on Saturday, July 14th

Come and see us and a few of our dogs at the Pet Value on Centrum Blvd in Orleans, the one besides Place D'Orleans.  NARC will be there from 10am to 4pm on July 14th for a show and tell and also to raise funds or donations for our rescues.  We are in need of canned goods, are accepting Canadian Tire Money to purchase supplies needed on a regular basis such as paper towels, Husky cleaning products and Javex.  We also always welcome paper journal, the non glossy ones if you wish to drop them off at NARC or at this event on Saturday, July 14th.  That being said, the NARC location will be closed that day and re-opening Sunday, July 15th from 1pm to 3pm.  Hoping to see you all there!
